Our History...

Brookfield School is a co-educational day school for 160 students in pre-school through eighth grade. The school was founded in Sacramento in 1962 and opened in Reno, Nevada in 1978, and continues to serve the educational needs of the community. Brookfield School is an academically challenging school with a learn-to-read, all day Kindergarten, which we call Pre-First.

To meet the ever changing needs of our families, we have included a very small Pre-School to serve our parents and introduce to 3 and 4 year olds a more exciting and challenging , yet fun-filled day. It is a step above the typical pre-school curriculum. Our Before and After School Care is now a popular, growing program. In addition we have weekly sessions of Summer School that are relaxed and fun. It is designed to serve the remedial student, to enrich the talented students, and to develop interest in the arts as well.

OUR PHILOSOPHY. . .

Brookfield School is committed to the overall development of each child. To this end we provide strong academic instruction in the basic skills as well as a wide variety of cultural and aesthetic experiences within a success oriented program.

Because there are great differences among children of the same age, factors other than chronological age are considered in planning a program to meet the intellectual, social, emotional, and physical need of individuals in the classroom.

We believe that children learn best in a safe environment in which individuality is treasured, in which children are encouraged to respond to the needs of others, and in which adult-child interpersonal relationships are characterized by mutual respect, affection and genuine concern for the welfare of others

If ever there was a cause, if ever there can be a cause worthy to be upheld by all of the toil and sacrifice that the human hand or breast can endure, it is the cause of education.

- Horace Mann

OUR MISSION.....  Brookfield School will continuously be engaged in developing the model school of academic excellence dedicated to:

bulletstudent safety
bulletstudent responsibility

OUR GOALS. . .

The curriculum at Brookfield is designed to insure that children are encouraged to develop to the fullest of their potential. Their needs are met through an exceptionally broad and diversified sequence of both planned and informal experiences. The desired outcome of the program is development of the personal and intellectual qualities which will facilitate entry into secondary and post-secondary study.  This will encourage broad, rich, and successful relationships and subsequently influence their chosen careers and family life.

SPECIFIC GOALS

bullet The child should develop a strong sense of self-worth which is essential for the satisfying, productive participation in society.
bulletThe child should master the basic skills which are necessary as a foundation for study in various academic disciplines while internalizing self-discipline and love of learning necessary for self motivation for life long learning.
bullet The child should develop an appreciation for and an understanding of the cultural heritage in music, drama, art aesthetics which enrich the individual's personal and social experience.
bullet The child should develop a high degree of self-discipline which is requisite for rational decision making.
bulletThe child should develop the courage to try and the willingness to risk imperfection.
We want the children to gain self confidence and come:
bullet to feel responsible for their own behavior,
bullet to evaluate their own progress,
bullet to make their own decisions,
bullet to accept efforts of self and others,
bullet to stay with tasks,
bullet to use talents and efforts for the good of all, not only for personal gain,
bullet to feel glad for successes of others as well as their own.

Our Discipline. . .

Discipline With Dignity

We practice this positive approach by using logical consequences for misbehavior.

We use Conflict Resolution that teaches rules for fighting fairly:
bullet We find out the problem
bullet We attack the problem - not the person
bullet We listen to each person
bullet We care about each other's feelings
bullet We are responsible for what we say and do
bullet We make it right

We work on controlling anger....We problem solve through conflicts... Consequences range from:

bullet warnings
bullet time-outs with problem solving
bullet regrouping and re-centering with problem solving
bullet planning sessions on alternative behaviors
bullet guided sessions with office personnel
bullet parent conferences
We never use corporal punishment.

*** NOTE *** We Do Not accept or keep behavior problems.
