Competition

  Name: Brain Drain

  What is it? Three areas will constitute the competition among teams composed of sixth, seventh and eighth graders.

Area I:  25%- Brain powered. Use your creative powers to solve a problem that will be presented the day of the competition. Points will be awarded for originality, the ability to work and plan together and a solution that fits the criteria.

Area II: 50% -Technical. Points are awarded for how well team members have worked together, how well the project meets the criteria and how will it adheres to scientific principles. The team that places first wins the most number of points.

Area III: 25% - Performance. An original performance or skit needs to accompany the technical of the competition. Costumes, originality, acting are part of this grade.

  The Competition?

            Design a vehicle no longer than one foot which when powered by the wind (a fan) will move a distance of approximately 15 feet. Scores will be based upon the speed and distance the vehicle is able to travel. Once the vehicle is set in motion, no one may interfere with it.

  The teams? 

            Teams will be assigned by teachers. Each team will consist of a combination of sixth, seventh and eighth graders. All members of the team are required to participate.

  Costs?

            Teams may not spend more than $20 on materials. Receipts must be handed in to verify costs. The cost of materials you already have around the house will be figured in at “garage sale prices.” The time?

            Your vehicles will be due the second week in March. The competition will be performed during a Friday assembly. You will have Fridays to work on the competition and one science period per week. Skiers may need to get together with teammates outside of class time.
