SCHEDULE AND PROCEDURES

SCHEDULE

Wed., Oct. 9 Announcement to rooms that positions for Student Government will be open to all 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. As soon as the application is turned into the office with the proper signatures - parent and teacher - students may begin campaigning. Four posters may be hung in the two covered patio areas only. No food, pencils, or pens are to be passed out during the campaign by candidates or their supporters.

Monday, Oct. 21 Deadline for all applications to be turned into the office.

Oct. 28 - Nov. 1 CAMPAIGN

Monday, Nov. 4th All candidates for Treasurer will go from room to room to give a speech. Voting by secret ballot will take place at this time in each room. Turn in the ballots to office DAILY.

Tues. Nov. 5th All candidates for Secretary will give speeches with secret ballot voting in each room. Turn in ballots to Office

Wed., Nov. 6th All candidates for Vice-President will give speeches with secret ballot voting in each room. Turn in ballots to office.

Thurs., Nov. 7th All candidates for President will give speeches with secret ballot voting in each room. Turn in ballots to office.

Friday, Nov. 8th The announcement of the Leadership Council officers for the Spring 2000 term will be announced during Friday morning assembly, February 4, 2000, in the Multipurpose Room.

Those students wishing to participate must:

1. Fill out an OFFICIAL officer application form found in the office.

2. Have teacher and parental permission to meet every other week for a half an hour. (time TBA)

3. Be willing to give a brief 1 min. speech to each class. Each class will vote by secret ballot immediately after speeches are made in their classroom.

4. Positions open will include: President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer.

DUTIES WILL BE:

The PRESIDENT will run the Brookfield School Student Leadership weekly meetings, and will generally represent the entire student body at official functions.

The VICE-PRESIDENT will aid the President in routine duties and be able to take over when the President is not available.

The SECRETARY will write down and keep the official actions of the Student Government/ Leadership Council meetings in an orderly fashion. These will be copied and distributed to all teachers after each meeting.

The TREASURER will keep an accurate record of any financial records that might be required for the Student Government/Leadership Council.

TERM OF OFFICE:
1. Fall Term, (elections in late September) October through January
2. Spring Term, (elections in late January) February through the end of the school year.
Students who are elected and have served successfully as an officer in the Fall Term are also allowed to run for and serve as an officer during the Spring Term, if they are reelected.

MEETINGS:

The Student Government/Leadership Council will probably meet in the Library every other Tuesday, Lunch hour or TBA, unless it is necessary to be rescheduled by the Council.

A representative from every classroom (on a rotating basis) is also chosen to attend the weekly Leadership Council meeting. It is this student representative's job to contribute ideas to the discussion, to bring pad/pencil and take notes, and to go back to his/her classroom and tell the other students what was discussed in the meeting.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR ELIGIBILITY TO APPLY FOR LEADERSHIP COUNCIL:

*6th, 7th, 8th grade student
*Average or above grades
*Satisfactory or better citizenship
*Models appropriate behavior in the classroom and on the playground
*Respects all adults
*Follows class and school rules
*Responsible and dependable

for Leadership Council Officer

In order to foster the ideals of democracy, government, and leadership responsibility, we are offering you the opportunity to participate in student government.

All interested 6th, 7th, and 8th graders are eligible to apply for all of the school officer positions.

These officers will officiate over Leadership Council made up of representatives from every class. The council will meet weekly on EVERY OTHER TUESDAY for 1/2 hour, TBA. MRS. GARDNER and MRS. JOHNSON will be volunteer advisors for this program and teach the students RobertsÕ Rules of Order; and will assist in guiding the agenda. The first meeting will be NOV. 12th.

Those students wishing to participate must:

* Fill out an officer application form found in the office and turn in by Oct. 21.
* Have average or above average grades in every subject.
* Be respectful of all adults.
* Follow classroom and school rules.
* Be responsible and dependable.
* Have parent and teacher permission to meet weekly for half an hour.
* Be willing to give a 30 second speech to each class encouraging students to vote for YOU.
* Attend the Leadership Council meetings, perform the duties of the office, and act as a role model for the younger Brookfield representatives and the student population.

-Paper campaign badges may be worn.

-No food, pens, or pencils are to be distributed or promised during the campaign.

-All applicants will deliver a 30 second speech in every classroom.
