Here are some brief descriptions (as clips from past newsletters) of the activities the students participate here at BROOKFIELD SCHOOL.

OPEN HOUSE!  All parents and students are invited to our OPEN HOUSE evening in Sept , from 6:00 to 7:00 pm. Refreshments will be available after a class meeting and school tour.

MUSIC -  GUITAR WILL BEGIN THIS FRIDAY FOR THE 8TH GRADE CLASS.  PLEASE BRING ONE FROM HOME, RENT ONE, BUY ONE ($95.00), OR USE ONE OF OURS, WHICH CANNOT BE TAKEN HOME FOR PRACTICE.  RECORDERS WILL ALSO BEGIN FRIDAY FOR THIRD AND FOURTH GRADE CLASSES. EITHER BUY ONE, BUY ONE FROM US, OR USE ONE OF OURS, WHICH CANNOT BE TAKEN HOME. RECORDERS ARE $5.00 AND THE MUSIC IS $2.00.  ALL STUDENTS NEED THE MUSIC, WHICH MRS. GARRISH WILL ORDER. LET US  KNOW IF WE CAN ADD IT TO YOUR BILL TO MAKE LIFE A LITTLE EASIER.

LEADERSHIP COUNCIL - APPLICATIONS ARE BEING PROCESSED.  NEXT WEEK WE WILL HAVE CAMPAIGNING WITH POSTERS AND SLOGANS,  ETC.    The nominees for office are giving their speeches to each classroom this week . The votes will be tallied and the new officers  will be announced at our Friday Assembly.

AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS - We are lining up clubs for after school.  If you are interested in giving your time to some program, let the office know.  Last year we had  many volunteer clubs: Spanish, Chess, Internet, Drawing,  Science, Arts and Crafts, Soccer, etc.  We need activities like these this year  to  enrich the student's experience here.  

LEADERSHIP RETREAT - In October we will be sending a delegation from Brookfield School to join other students in our area. Global town is a unique three-day residential experience  for 12-13 year olds, focusing on multicultural human relations training and using diverse methods to address areas of self-esteem, prejudice and cross cultural communication. This is a rare and special opportunity for our students. We hope that all can schedule it.  It will be October 20 - 22. More information will come to the classes, then a parent orientation will be scheduled. 

COSTUME PARTY -  The main one was a Costume Party October 26, the day before a three day holiday, from about 4 to 6.  Each teacher, with, parent  help, will organize some booth activity, or haunted room,  in their room, outside, or in the Great Room, if necessary.  We will have refreshments as well.  Parents will bring cookies and the school will provide refreshments, and the PTA will organize clean up. Prizes will be given for best costume.  Please offer to help your teacher with ideas and time.

  MARTIAL ARTS - Master Wheatley's TaeKwonDo will be back again this year with the addition of higher grades on Thursdays. . The first meeting will be FREE to all interested students. Upon signing up , the cost will be $60.00 for a 4 week session. Information can be picked up in the office.

SKI PROGRAM- Watch for all the details to come out soon for the winter ski program.  Volunteers for drivers and Chaperones will be needed including a parent volunteer as Director.  The program will start on Friday Jan. 12.

FRANCE - Organizational Meeting of all interested parents , Thursday night at 7:30 PM.  We will be going over the family ski break in Feb.

DARE will be coming to Brookfield's 5th and 6th grade students in January.

MATH LAB - The students that are reporting to Math Lab are having a great time while increasing their math fact fluency.  It has become apparent that the students who attend several times a week do much better than just once a week for retention. Although we have  had a very supportive turnout, a few student s whose math future rests on the quick retention of math facts are NOT attending.  We shall be calling parents to 

KID'S CRAFTS NIGHT  by Mrs. Ponce  Parents shopping night out.  PTA has scheduled two evenings to entertain the kids to help parents for the holiday season.  Please sign up in the office. Wed. Dec 6 and Dec 13 from 4:30 to 8:00 pm.  There will be pizza, games and Crafts.  Volunteers are needed to help with this fun evening as well. so please call the office, or talk with Mrs. Ponce.

CHESS CLUB TO START NEXT WEEK! - Academic Chess has been on our campus after school for the last 3 years.  Vern will be running classes on Wed. After School

PTA - The next PTA meeting will be held on first Tues of each month.

WINTER PROGRAM - In order to fit comfortably in our Great Room, we are looking at two performances as detailed below.

SATURDAY SCHOOL - It appears that some students need more time to complete their in-class work, their home work, or make-up work. Because we wish to do everything we can to help students succeed, we will begin assigning students to Saturday School It will run from 9 to 11 am every Saturday. Students will not be dismissed early, so a reading book, assignments, necessary books and materials will be needed. You will be notified if the teacher feels that Saturday School will be helpful. We need appointment confirmation by the parents to know who to expect. If the Saturday class is missed, then all PE, Computer, and lunch recess will be forfeited until the assignment is completed the following week. 

BROOKFIELD SCHOOL SKATE PARTY. Leadership Council will plan a family ice skate party some Friday in March after skiing is over.

ALL SCHOOL SKATE PARTY TOMORROW! - Leadership Council will sponsor a all school social for families tomorrow, Friday from 3:30 to 4:30 at the downtown rink at Harrah's and the Arch on Virginia Street. See flyer.

GRANDMA/PA BINGO PARTY NEXT THURSDAY - Bingo is scheduled for January 18, 7:00 pm, so mark your calendar. This was great fun and we would like more to attend this year. Please let the grandparents know of the event. Parents are welcome, childcare will not be provided.

HANDS ON SCIENCE ON FRIDAYS! Mr. Trevino or the classroom teachers  have additional hands-on science labs every Friday.

EVERY MORNING ! MATH LAB: We have expanded our MATH LAB to include 3rd grade and above. It is recommended to attend 3 times a week. Regular attendance will double students math speed. Students that do not attend will begin to fall behind. Math Lab will now run every morning in the Library at 8:00 AM. A letter will be sent home detailing the program.

4th GRADE VIOLINS: We will be switching from the recorders to violins in the 4th grade. This will be starting in a few weeks. If you wish to donate your recorder back to Brookfield, it would be appreciated. Violin music books will be available in the office soon.

SCIENCE CENTER AT UNR - Mrs. Lawrence planned a field trip for 5th to 8th grades yesterday. Thanks to the many drivers. It was enjoyed by all. On March 14th, 3rd and 4th grade students will go.


SNOW SURVIVAL CLASS - The 4th- 8th grade students will go up to Summut for a class on snow survival, given by the National Park Rangers.

JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT Mrs. Lester is trying to get the very popular business oriented program for K to 8th called Junior Achievement. PARENT VOLUNTEERS - 1-2 hours a week for five weeks. Please contact your teacher if you would be willing to give this very exciting program some time this spring. Teachers can bring the list to the office for Mrs. Lester to pick up.

BOOK FAIR - YEA! IT IS BOOK FAIR TIME! We will start book fair on the first week in March. Books will be on display in the Great Room for purchase. A parent coffee/tea for the book fair will be Friday morning

Our book fair is an annual event to raise funds for the Library. Please come one hour before school in the mornings or one hour after school to purchase books for your child.

Parent Volunteers are needed to help sell books from 8:00 am to 9:00 am and 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm Wed. and Thur. this week and Mon - Wed next week. Please sign up with Mrs. Roubo or in the office to help sell books. Each volunteer will be eligible for the drawing of a Book Fair gift certificate of $25. This will begin our Read-a-Thon for the month of March. More information will come out on this later.

CHAUTAUQUA -Classes will start preparing for the annual Chautauquan presentations. The students will select someone famous and read a biography about them. They present themselves as that person with a short monologue and prepare to answer a few questions by their classmates. Some will be presented at our Friday Assembly in early May and possibly the spring show mid May. Please see your teacher for more information.

PARENT SOCIAL - Mark your calendar. Our 6th annual Parent Social/Dinner usually held in Jan/Feb  More details and costs to follow.

UPPER GRADE MATH FIELD TRIP: Hands-On Equations, Making Algebra Child's Play. Some teachers and students attended this seminar yesterday and enjoyed it! We will begin hands-on equations this Friday for the 6th Grade, Then we will introduce it to our lower grades.

SHADOWING - The Eighth graders will spend some time with a professional in a career of their choice in the next few weeks. Mrs. Thomas is setting up the times/ places.  So far it has been a complete success in exciting the students and making them aware of how one might spend their day in a particular job.

CAREER DAY - Thanks for the volunteers for Career Day. We have our slate completed now for the lower and for the upper grades. The 7th and 8th Graders will shadow someone in a career of their choice for half a day. Mrs. Thomas is working hard in integrating all the schedules. 

Washington DC, Travelers: We leave May 1, 2000 at Reno airport on United Flight #2437 to San Francisco at 6:00 a.m. Please be at the airport by 5:15 a.m. I will have all airline tickets with me. I will be waiting inside in front of the United ticket desk. Our return flight will be Friday night @ 10:30 p.m. on Northwestern from Minneapolis/St. Paul. I will be carrying my cell phone with me, you may call the school office and Miss. Martinez will be able to give the telephone number to anyone who needs to reach us. Upper grades' Social: Leadership Council is planning a school social "Spring Fling" for grades 5th - 8th on May 19 at the Hidden Valley Country Club from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. Students will be welcome from other schools. 

Mother's Day Tea: Mark your calendar in  May from 11:00 to 1:00. There will will be three seatings for the tea in order to avoid overcrowding. Please remember to call the office and R.S.V.P. The tea times are as follows:*Pre-1st & 1st 11:00-11:30 am*Pre-School, 2nd, & 3rd 11:45 - 12:15 pm*4th - 8th 12:30 - 1:00 Please meet in your child's classroom and walk over with their class. Invention Convention: Will be in the evening on May 24, 2000 in the Multipurpose room. Students should begin thinking of an invention they would like to create and display. More information on this event will be going home soon.
