PRE 1st - Our P-1st teacher Mrs. Quintel has been put on bed rest by her doctor for the remainder of her pregnancy. Mrs. Friedlander and Mrs. Fullerton have taken on the added responsibility with the utmost enthusiasm which comes from professional, master teachers. The impact on the children has been carefully considered for the least disruption. Mrs. Friedlander will have additional help from Mrs. Reilly with whom the children are familiar. Mrs. Quintel hopes to participate in the Awards Dinner. True to our philosophy of small class size, the classrooms will remain small, about 15 in each class.

The cost is $155 for the four days on the shore of Lake Tahoe. This is a great experience for the student and a time away from home. Mr. Richards, our 7th grade teacher, is very excited to be teaching. PTA is working on helping to reduce the cost.

READ-A-THON - Congratulations students! You have read 137,589 pages in the month of March. Every class participated, which means an ice-cream social for all!! Each class also has a winner that earned a Barnes and Nobel Trip. Those winning classes will have a free dress day determined by their teacher. SUMMER FUN - Your child will come home with a trial summer fun software. This should be previewed by the parent/child and if the package is to be purchased, fill out the forms and return forms with money. If it is not to be purchased, please return it to your

UPPER GRADES ARE GOING TO 6 FLAGS - The ones signed up for this excursion will meet here at school at 7am this Friday. Regular school will be held for those not attending.
IMMUNIZATION SHOTS - Almost free clinic for the new childhood shots will be Sat. April 12 at 11am to 3pm at Shoppers Square in Reno and the Fire Department at 1605 Victoria Square in Sparks: chickenpox, and Hepatitis B are free and Hepatitis A is $25.00. All other required vaccinations are offered at no charge (Bring
child's immunization record). Hepatitis B will be given on our campus April 14 for 7th graders who are scheduled to complete their
series.
TAE-KWON-DO CLASSES - Both classes are now combined and will start at 3:30 pm on Tues. and Thurs. It would be appreciated for parents in the Great Room to keep snacks and young children under control to give the instructor the respect of silence that he needs to conduct class in optimum
conditions.

SUMMER VACATION WORKBOOKS AND SOFTWARE - Learning doesn't have to stop this summer. A brochure describing a summer workbook and software went home last week. 2ND GRADE - Field Trip yesterday was very interesting. They went to Channel 2 to see how the weather reports are made.
SKI PROGRAM! - Make up day is scheduled for next Friday April 4th. All drivers and skiers will go as a normal day. This week we need a parent volunteer to help at 12:00 - 1:00 to hand out Brookfield Tickets at Mt. Rose, please call the office if you can assist us.

OUR ANNUAL BOOK FAIR STARTS TODAY! - During the fair students can purchase books on display in the Great Room before and after school from 8-9 am and 3-4 pm, Friday 1-2pm. Clifford, the Big Red Dog, will make appearances. Donuts and coffee for parents will be served on Friday from 9-10am. See the back for details.

Please park in the rear church lot and plan to take as many children as possible to assure all students have rides and to reduce the parking congestion at Mt. Rose. Parents who did not complete all forms or sign the back of the form will accompany their own children to Mt. Rose. Parent drivers are responsible for other children they drive from the time they leave school until they are returned. Children can be picked up at the school from 4:30 to 5:00 pm. If you are not assigned to drive students on Friday we may still need drivers occasionally. Please be available.

YOUNG AT ART - Art classes for the preschoolers and pre first grades is offered starting this Friday at 1:30 in the
greatroom. There is only room for 12 students and the forms and registration is in the office. The cost is $44.00 a month.
JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT - We are excited to start JA, a program designed to show the relevance of education to the workplace, and to prepare students for secondary school and lifetime learning. We need a parent volunteer for each class to come into the class for 5 visits of one hour or less each visit. All volunteers need to attend a meeting we will schedule for the last week of January. Please call or come into the office to sign up.
SHOES - Our dress code states no high heels, sandals, or thick soles. Please wear comfortable, durable, sensible shoes for school and PE.
NEW EXPANDED ACCELERATED READING LIST - Ask your teacher for a new, expanded reading list for the accelerated reading program. Mrs.
McKernan, Mrs. Curtis, and PTA used the scarecrow moneys to purchase more tests for our school! Please be very careful when checking out books on the list for the higher reading levels. Make sure the book is
unabridged. Students cannot pass the tests reading the abridged editions.

With Thanksgiving being so late this year, we have had a very short preparation time for our winter music program. Mrs. Holdridge was sick for several sessions, and we had the snow day. As the songs fell into place yesterday we belatedly noticed that the Jewish holiday and songs were not in place as usual. For this we are deeply sorry. We are very respectful of all cultural differences. If anyone would like to make a Jewish, (or any other) presentation at our Friday assembly, please contact the school.

ART WINNERS! - Our Pre-First classes participated in the Family Counseling
Service 10th annual Nevada Family Week Poster Contest. We had a clean sweep of
the Kindergarten level. Michael Hanna won 1st, Alec Brennan won 2nd, and Ashley
Frolich won 3rd place. The overall K - 6th grade winner was also from our
Kindergarten - Cameron Martin. All winners accepted their award from Attorney
General Frankie Sue Del Papa last week and we are proud of them all.
PTA GREAT FATHER'S (SPECIAL PERSON) LUNCHEON - All fathers and special persons
had a great visit to school. Thanks to all.
NUTCRACKER SUITE BALLET - An old Brookfield Family, whose child is now in

FOOD DRIVE WAS GREAT! Upper Grade Community Service Project collected 1231
pieces of food! All students received a goose bumps folder from the 7th and 8th

Trevino's class. Each teacher will organize a free dress day for their class.
YOUNG CHAUTAUQUA - Some presentations for each grade are occurring this week and
the students did a wonderful job with all their presentations last week.

read a biography about that person. The student will then present him/herself as
that person with a short monologue and prepare to answer questions from his/her

AFTER SCHOOL CARE - We are very sad to say goodbye to Miss Thompson. Mrs.
Reilly is excited about starting ASC care activities from 4:30- 5:30. She plans
on introducing arts and crafts, board games, reading buddies and these are just
the beginning of her plans. Also on Fridays with Ms. VandeBurgt's help they plan
on cooking, music and a nice variety of activities for all after school care
children.

GREAT FALL FESTIVAL! - Thanks to all who helped. The silent auction
participation to raise funds for each class was a big success. Thank you for all
the wonderful cakes brought in for the cake walk. Everyone enjoyed the cotton
candy by Donated by Mrs. Cashell and made by Mrs. Roubo. There was very cool
button making with Mrs. Welcome. All the games were enjoyed by all. The costumes
were awesome.

REPORT CARD DAY - Today is the first term for report cards, look for them
in your child's backpack.
STUDENT COUNCIL - Nominations for officers is occurring this week.
Deadline to hand in the applications for student council is Monday Oct. 21.
Campaigns will begin Oct. 28 and speeches to classes and elections will run Nov.
4th-7th. All 6th - 8th graders are eligible for student council. Parents and
teachers must sign the applications. Please pick up applications in the office.
FALL FESTIVAL - The PTA excited about the annual all school Fall Festival,
Thursday, Oct. 24. from 4 to 6 pm. The whole family is welcome. We will parade
in costume, enjoy games, activities, cake walk, trick or treat with teachers.
PTA will collect $1.00 per person at the door in the Great Room. Your teacher
will need a scarecrow from your class to enter into the silent auction. All
money raised with the selling of the scarecrows will go to the individual class.
We would appreciate no weapons and dripping blood as part of
the costumes. If your young child might be too scared with the various costumes,
you might not want him/her to participate. Costumes are not to be worn during
school day.
MATH LAB AND READING LAB - Morning and afternoon reading and math labs are
up and running. Please call the office for times and placement.
3rd - 6th GRADE PICKUP AT BASKETBALL COURT, 2nd GRADE AT FLAG POLE FRONT
YARD - All parents should wait off campus, behind the bleachers or behind the
fence by the flag pole. The teachers are trying to escort the classes to the
gate. Please assist us in the safety procedure and send anyone unfamiliar to the
office.

sponsoring a fund raiser for Brookfield School. They have a pumpkin contest for
a $5.00 guess. If you guess the weight of the pumpkin, you win a dinner for 4

GIFTED AND TALENTED PROGRAM - Stanford University and Brookfield School
are offering a computer based learning course in mathematics for students of
high ability. This is an independent Education program. Call the office with

PARENT EXPECTATIONS - While on campus for any reason, if you see a child who
needs discipline, as an observer it is imperative that you tell staff rather
than discipline another family's child. This includes all volunteers, art,
lunch, and classroom, as well.
PTA FUNDRAISERS - Scolari's Market savings cards provide for funds to go to
Brookfield School PTA . If you shop at Scolari's please have your purchase
credits go to the PTA. Just ask anyone at Scolari's to set up a savings card and
direct funds to Brookfield School PTA. Wrapping paper catalog will go home next
Friday, Oct. 18th and will be due back by Nov. 1st. All orders will be in for
the holidays. Box Tops for Education are also collected to raise funds. Please
bring in your box tops and put them in the PTA drawer in the office.
BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL PLAYGROUND AREA - All Preschooler and Pre
kindergarten students must play in their designated preschool play area, which
is for these students only. Older children are not allowed in preschool play
area. Even with parental supervision, the general play areas are too rough for
this younger age.
FALL FESTIVAL VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - To make this successful, we need all
parents to participate as much as possible. We have enough candy, please sign up
for treats or small prizes. The PTA is planning another annual all school Fall
Festival, Thursday, Oct. 24. from 4 to 6 pm. The whole family is welcome. We
will parade in costume, enjoy games, activities, cake walk, trick or treat with
teachers. PTA will collect $1.00 per person at the door in the Great Room. Your
teacher will need a scarecrow from your class to enter into the silent auction.
All money raised with the selling of the scarecrows will go to the individual
class.
We would appreciate no weapons and dripping blood as part of the costumes. If
your young child might be too scared with the various costumes, you might not
want them to participate. Costumes are not to be worn during school day.
THE GRILL - The restaurant on the corner of Talbot and McCarran Blvd. is
sponsoring a fund raiser for Brookfield School. They have a pumpkin contest for
a $5.00 guess. If you guess the weight of the pumpkin, you win a dinner for 4
people. Please support the fundraiser and guess the weight when you visit for
lunch or dinner.
GIFTED AND TALENTED PROGRAM - Stanford University and Brookfield School are
offering a computer based learning course in mathematics for students of high
ability. This is an independent Education program. Call the office with
questions.
ANY SMALL BUSINESS WISHING TO ADVERTISE WITH BROOKFIELD? - Any business
interested in advertising on Brookfield's book covers / portfolios please call
the office. These will be used for the next 2-4 years. The min. cost for each
business card size is $200.

(Oct. 21 - 24th.). Please sign up on your teachers door. For all other grades
the teacher conferences are held by parent request. During this week the
students in these grades will be out at 2:30 pm every day, supervision will be
available.
(Oct. 24 might not be a good day to conference with the fall festival going on)

PTA MEETING - Tues. Sept. 10th, Mrs. VandenBurgt is our new President and
Mrs. Trimm is our new Secretary. The meeting was well attended. The library fund
will purchase books for the accelerated reader program. The next meeting is Oct.
8th, 9:00 AM.

9/11 REMEMBRANCE - We had a nice all school ceremony at 9:00 am around the
flag pole in our front yard. The 5th and 6th graders read beautiful essays on
what the pledge of allegiance means to them. Thanks to all.

WELCOME TO ALL OUR NEW FAMILIES - It
is so great to see so many old friends as well. For those who were unable to sign up for the various lists,
they will be in the office for a few weeks. We have lists for car pooling,
library, hot lunch, etc. Please see your teacher for Room Helper sign ups. We
are looking for volunteers for after school enrichment programs, ie.
chess, computers, Spanish, soccer, arts/crafts, board games.
